The Hunger Games: Peeta’s POV. Chapter 2

January 1, 2019 (updated January 9, 2020) Published by spamifischer

Chapter 2

I hear gasps and murmurs from all around the crowd. I look up towards Katniss. She is looking straight ahead, shock and disbelief engraved on her face. I’m having a hard time believing it myself. This is only Prim’s first year, meaning her name is only in the reaping ball once. Unless, of course, she signed up for a tessara, but I doubt Katniss would ever allow her to do that, not when she could sign up for it herself. I see Prim walking slowly and silently down the aisle leading up to the stage. She doesn’t cry, but you can see that the blood has drained from her face. Then I see Katniss moving toward her, slowly at first, then turning into a run, pushing people out of the way, crying her sister’s name.

“Prim! Prim!” Katniss screeches, almost choking. The crowd makes way for her as she runs to her sister, stepping in front of her and shielding her with her arms.  As if to say Don’t take her. Take me instead. “I volunteer!” She screams in desperation. “I volunteer as tribute!”

A rumble of confusion. The gasps of the crowd. Prim’s screams of retaliation. I can’t believe what’s just happened. For a moment I’m convinced I’m back in my nightmare. District Twelve has never had a volunteer, at least not as long as I’ve been alive.

Effie seems at a loss for words. When she begins speaking, I can’t even tell what she says, still in shock from the sudden turn of events. Unlike some districts, where eligible kids train for their whole lives and then willingly volunteer, District 12 has never been that way. Representing your district in the Games is not an honor. Rather, it’s a death sentence. And we know it. Therefore, everyone seems to have forgotten how the volunteering process works, even Effie. As she fumbles for the words and tries to remember the official process, the Mayor brushes her off, saying, “What does is matter?” He’s right. One thing is for sure: Katniss is District 12’s female tribute for the 74th annual Hunger Games.

Risking her own life to save her sisters is a possibility I never would’ve imagined even in my worst nightmares, though it’s something I would never put past her. As long as she’s alive, Katniss will always protect her sister. Always.

Prim’s screaming slaps me back to reality. She’s clinging to her big sister. “No, Katniss!” She screams, “No! You can’t go!”

Katniss kneels down and says something to Prim, trying to wriggle through her tight grip, but I can’t hear her from this distance. Gale steps in and gently picks Prim up to keep her from fighting. She’s still screaming and squirming, trying to escape his firm yet caring grasp. Gale says something to Katniss, nodding toward the stage. I can tell he’s trying hard to hide his shock as well. He carries the protesting Prim away, and Katniss bravely marches forward to the stage.

Effie pipes up. “Well, bravo! That’s the spirit of the Games!” She says excitedly, giving a little clap. “What’s your name?”

“Katniss Everdeen.” Her voice is hollow.

“I bet my buttons that was your sister,” Effie says, jolly as always, as if a family hadn’t just been torn apart and loved one’s lives ruined forever. “Don’t want her to steal all the glory, do we? Come on everybody! Let’s give a big round of applause to our newest tribute!”

The square is completely silent. No one claps. Steal all the glory? Effie’s comment makes Katniss’ actions seem selfish, as if she wanted this. But we all know that there is nothing good about the Games; no glory and no prize could ever make up for the cost, the trauma. No, Katniss didn’t do it for attention or glory. She did it out of love, bravery, and sacrifice. Suddenly, everyone in the crowd, beginning with one or two people and then rippling through the masses until everyone has joined, begins to touch the three middle fingers of their left hand to their lips, and we hold them out to Katniss. This is a very old District Twelve salute, a heartfelt sign of respect, appreciation, and an admirable goodbye, like something at a war funeral. I join in the salute, a final goodbye to the girl I’d never had the courage to tell the truth about how I feel.

Just then, bringing an end to the silence, drunken Haymitch staggers across the stage over to Katniss. He gives her a congratulatory clap on the shoulder and throws an arm around her. “Look at her! Look at this one! I like her!” He slurs. Katniss cringes at the smell of his breath. “Lots of….” Haymitch pauses, searching for the right word.”Spunk!” He concludes as he let’s go of Katniss and stumbles towards the front of the stage. He points into the camera that is recording us at this very moment. “More than you-” he yells, “-more than you!” He seems to be trying to mock whoever is watching. The other districts? The Capitol? Who knows. He takes another wobbly step forward and falls right off the stage. I can see a group of Peacekeepers approaching him with a stretcher in hand, plopping him on and carrying his unconscious body away from the scene.

Effie Trinket seems rather pleased with today’s events. I’m sure she didn’t wake up this morning expecting such a show, especially from District 12.  “What an exciting day!” She says. “But more excitement to come! It’s time to choose our boy tribute!”

I bite my lip, feel my chest clench up. Now more than ever I hope I’m not picked. If I live, that means Katniss dies. I couldn’t, I wouldn’t, stand being put in an arena and forced to kill her. I would kill myself first. I just hope that she will win and come back to me. Maybe then I would have the courage to tell her what I never could before.

Effie walks over dramatically, knowing every eye and every camera is on her. Each tap of her heels feels like a stab to my chest. She sticks her hand into the reaping ball and picks out the first slip she touches. Then she walks back to the microphone to read it, and my heart begins beating so fast that the blood pulsing through it is all I can seem to hear. Faintly, as if it were miles away, I hear Effie speak.

I hear my name. It’s as if I’m underwater, people murmuring all around me but I can’t make out what they’re saying. But that can’t be, it’s nearly impossible. Thousands of slips, only five with my name on it. Just as I convince myself that I’ve misheard her, everyone turns to look at me. Oh no. I’m District Twelve’s other tribute.

I hear Effie again, much clearer now. “Where are you, Peeta Mellark?” She says, teasingly.

The crowd makes way for me, their expressions filled with anywhere from relief to anguish. I pass a sea of familiar faces. Friends, classmates, customers from the bakery. I make it to the aisle and walk up to the stage stiffly, shock still engraved on my face. I try my best to contain my emotions, resisting the urge to scream, to cry, to simply make a run for it. I step up onto the stage, joining Katniss, Effie, and Mayor Undersee.

“Does anyone wish to volunteer for Peeta Mellark?”

She is answered with complete silence. No one in their right mind would want to take my place. Rotee is too old, and I certainly don’t blame Ryean for not wanting to sentence himself to death. I search the crowd for my brothers, my dad, my mom, but I can’t find them in the sea of faces.

The mayor steps forward and reads the same old, boring Treaty of Treason like he does every year, but I’m far beyond listening. I’ve given up trying to locate my family and stare blankly at a spot far off in the distance. I’m snapped back into reality when the mayor tells us to shake hands. I turn to Katniss and take her right hand in mine. Before we let go, I squeeze her hand, hoping to be as reassuring as possible, but I know it’s to no avail. Nothing, absolutely nothing, can heal the pieces that have already been broken. She’s looking at me, and a sense of recognition shows in her expression.

Though we’ve hardly ever spoken, there was one day, years ago, that I remember so vividly, and by the look in her eyes at this moment, she does too. Katniss and I were both 11 years old. Her father had been killed in the mine accident a few months earlier, and they had no income, no one to take care of them. Her mother didn’t work, Katniss was too young to sign up for tessarae, and they were slowly running out of food, money, and hope. She tried to keep it quiet, tried to do as best she could to single-handedly support her family. But after hearing about her dad passing away, I made an effort to keep an eye on her. I felt an obligation to, afraid no one else would. She would come to school, looking more and more miserable each day. Her face was sallow, her skin clung to her bones. She looked like she hadn’t eaten or slept in days. I so desperately wanted to help her, but I was afraid. My mother would kill me if I tried to steal food from our own bakery to give away to someone from Katniss’ end of town, the “Seam brats,” as my mother called them.

One night in mid-january I was downstairs in the bakery, helping to finish up the last batch of the day. Rain was coming down in cold, heavy sheets outside. I stood by the heat of the fire, content to be inside next to its warm glow.

My peace was quickly interrupted by the sound of my mother, who was yelling out the back door at someone outside. “Get out of here you filthy Seam brat! I’m sick of you bums pawing through my trash!” I peered out the window to see the culprit. It was Katniss. She was peeking in our trash bin, trying to find something, anything, that she could feed her family with. “Do you want me to call the Peacekeepers, report you for stealing? They’ll put you out of your misery if that’s what you want,” my mother taunted maniacally, as if Katniss were a stray, diseased animal scrounging for food. I peered at her from behind my mother’s back as she replaced the trash can lid and backed away. My mom returned to the kitchen, muttering obscenities under her breath. But I stayed by the door, watching Katniss stagger weakly away until she couldn’t take it anymore and collapsed against an old apple tree behind our pig pen.

My mother called me inside to take the loaves out of the oven and I followed, aching for Katniss, wishing there was something I could do. I put on my mitts and as I started to pull out the two loaves, I had an idea. As if by a clumsy accident, I dropped the loaves into the fire, then quickly dished them out again to correct my mistake. My mom, hearing the clatter, rushed over to where I was, saw the burnt bread in my hands, and reacted just as I’d expected her to.

“Peeta what the hell is your problem? I ask you to take the bread out of the oven and you burn it! It’s not a very hard task, I thought even you could handle it!” She shoved me out the door, continuing to yell about how much money I’d cost them, how I wouldn’t be eating breakfast the next day. She had a rolling pin in her right hand and raised it to hit me hard across the face. I could feel my eye and cheekbone throbbing, moved my hands to my face to defend myself, and I tried as hard as I could not to cry out from the pain.

She shoved me outside into the pouring rain. I walked over to the pig pen as my mother yelled from the doorway. “Feed it to the pig, you stupid creature! Why not? No one decent will buy burned bread!” I tore off chunks of the burned parts, tossing them into the trough as the pigs began to feast. I heard the chime of a bell, a customer, and the slam of the back door as my mom went back inside. I glanced back towards the door and then, seeing that the coast was clear, I tossed both loaves in Katniss’ direction. She looked at me in disbelief, confused as to why I was helping her. With my mission accomplished, I walked back into the bakery, glancing back only for a moment to see Katniss tucking the loaves into her jacket.

I saw her in school the next day. It seemed as if the life had returned to her eyes, just as the life was returning to the world around us. All of a sudden the flowers were in bloom, the sun was shining, and I saw Katniss smile for the first time in months. I could’ve sworn I caught her eye and saw her gaze settle on the purple welt on my cheek, the prize from the dreary night before.

As I look into her deep grey eyes in this moment as we break off our handshake, I can still see the girl from five years ago. Still poor, still desperate, still doing everything it takes to help her family. But now she is much stronger, much braver, and much more determined than before. If she’s my enemy in the Games, I don’t stand a chance.

The Hunger Games: Peeta’s POV. Chapter 1

January 1, 2019 (updated December 6, 2020) Published by spamifischer

Because I’ve always loved the Hunger Games and immediately fell in love with Peeta as a character, I decided to write my own side to the story, through his perspective, to add more depth to the trilogy. I’ve written it in line with Suzanne Collin’s original books, chapter for chapter, so many of the descriptions, characters, and quotes come directly from the pages of her books. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Character Profile: Aquarius DeMarcus

December 15, 2018 Published by Matt

Aquarius was an ordinary girl, at first. She had a family, friends, a boyfriend… a good life. Then, her boyfriend died. Everyone said it was a suicide. She didn’t buy it. “He was murdered,” she insisted. To everyone. No one believed her. And she got angry. And when a living bomb gets angry, No one is safe. She exploded into stars, and the whole world went out. And she woke up in the desert, lost and alone in an endless wasteland.

Aquarius DeMarcus was a junior at Byers High in New York City. She and her boyfriend, Hunter Madison, were straight-A students, respected by students and teachers alike. They took no shit from anyone, and hated bullies. Hunter died under unknown circumstances on November 16, 2019. Everyone assumed it was suicide. Aquarius, adamant in her belief that he was murdered, became increasingly unstable with each passing day, consumed by anger and grief.

On January 3rd, 2020, Aquarius exploded. Quite literally. An unknowing “living bomb,” her anger detonated the explosives in her blood. She sent out an EMP so strong, it took out the entire world. She woke up on January 5th, 2020, with little memory of the explosion, to find the world an endless wasteland.

The Association of Super Beings and Extraordinary Humans: Chapter 19

November 14, 2018 (updated September 27, 2019) Published by MorbidToast

At this point, I honestly accepted my fate. “This is it” I thought to myself “You’ve failed yet again”. But before he sent me to my grave, a voice ran out and we both heard someone running towards us. It wasn’t Axel, nor was it Johnny or Jackie. It wasn’t even Tyler, though he wasn’t following far behind. It was Felicity, who launched a fireball at him, tears in her eyes

“Get away from him! I’ll burn your face off you freak!”

Also as it turns out, her aim isn’t that good and he launched that bone spike right into her leg. She fell and began to cry. Cry like I’ve never heard her before. I looked up at Dom, catching that sly smirk he had looking at her. Then I felt it. A feeling I hadn’t felt in a very long time. My chest tightened and my heart began to race; so fast in fact that my heart felt like it was on fire. I’m going to kill him I kept telling myself, I am going to kill him and it will fucking hurt. I grabbed his leg and swung, catching him off guard and knocking him to the floor. He got back up and ran at me, turning his hands to steel and ready to claw, but I was mad and I was ready. I ducked and hit him with one right into the chest and I heard his ribs crack HARD. That’s when I saw it again. The panic in his eyes that I swore I would see again. I grabbed him and he got me. He had blades his sleeves and now, I had a knife in my chest. I knelt, feeling panic, adrenaline rush, and drained and he was loving it

“Y-you ain’t shit you know that?! You can’t beat me! ME! I killed her! You know I did and I took my time! Hell, I even got me some action while I was at it! How’s that make you feel huh?! Dyin’ knowing that you couldn’t do shit cuz you’re weak!”

The adrenaline in my system burst and I saw red. I grabbed his wrist and squeezed, feeling the bones crush and snap like I was snapping a tooth pick. I rose slowly, pulling out the blade as carefully as I could. I looked him dead in his stone cold fuckin’ eyes with a glare that could kill.

“You’re the weak one here. You kidnapped a kid, you tortured him, ruined him; Just because you you’re too scared to come fight me. You’re evil Dom. The worst kind of evil. You’re the evil who has no end. No goal. You just want to hurt and kill because you’re what? Better than everyone?”

I leaned in, making sure he felt every single syllable

“You’re the one who’s going to hell tonight, you sick fuck!”

I reeled back and head butt him as hard as I could and the first thing that came to my head was something me and Tyler used to practice when we were kids. You see, me and Tyler actually named our own moves. Most heroes have them so they’re easier to market, which makes up a lot of our funding and also our pay. Of course, move names get made by the press for the same reasons and my very own Bullet-Fist Barrage is no exception. But this one? This one is one of my own. And by god did I feel good to scream to the heavens and hope Alice was listening so she knew I had won.

“B-Burning Heart!”

“TICKET TO HELL!!!!”

All the adrenaline and strength I could muster went straight into my right arm, and I landed one of the hardest punches I’ve ever thrown. My bones gave way almost immediately and Dom just broke. He went flying backwards and as he did, the ground caved in and pulled upwards and even the windows shattered in the bunkhouses. I stood there shaking, wanted to scream and wanted to give him another. I wanted to give him so many of those that it would’ve probably killed me if I had. I lumbered towards Felicity, catching the shock and absolute awe on her face, before collapsing near her.

“I….I think I won…”

That’s apparently what I said before I passed out, though it honestly felt like I had just gone to sleep. That’s the freaky thing about passing out; you can’t really tell the difference until someone else lets you know that you passed out. Anyway, I woke up a few hours after and from the sky still being somewhat dark, it hadn’t been that long. I tried to sit up, but the stinging in my chest told me that that was probably not good right now. It took a few minutes for me to realize that I wasn’t in a hospital. I was in Felicity’s room? Yeah, Fe’s room.

FELICITY’S ROOM!?!?!?

I bolted upright, totally ignoring the stinging in my chest. Why was I here?! More importantly, how did I even get here?! I only know most of these details because of what people told me. I remember punching Dom, then black and then I woke up there. Literally nothing in between which is why its so freaky. Anyway, I stood up, thankfully having my boxers on and for the most part bandages. Strangely, my right arm felt fine. Tingly, if a little numb, but fine. Like it never broke at all. I put on my jeans that were nearby and my jacket and opened the door. I looked up and down the short corridor, and saw that a few people were gathered in the common area. So, as you would, I headed out to see who it was.

“Hey umm….how did I get into-“

I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw who was there, talking to Tyler and Mama Glam. I almost fainted again but my adrenal surge was still in some affect.

“Ahh yes! Margo’s boy! How are you, young man?”

Absolute fucking Victory was saying hi to me; ME. I hadn’t seen him or even heard he was around ever since I was a kid. Remember when I said that I had some perks of being the son of a superhero? Well getting to meet a few of the greats was one of them. I had met Dragon Arms, The Soldier of Fortune, Cataclysm and even The Blight Witch (Don’t ask!). Then one day, my mum said she was gonna take me to a convention she had been invited to. This was pretty common for us and she always made sure to extend the invite to me. And that’s where I met my (second favourite) hero of all time. And he remembered me! I’m fanboying out just thinking about it! I stumbled over to get closer and well, I mean I couldn’t really do much anyway after the explosion from Dom but I managed to shake his hand

“I heard of the attack. You have both your mothers strength and her resolve. I’m impressed!”

“T-thank you sir! I-its an awesom- honour! I meant honour!”

Glam filled us in on what was perhaps the best thing that happened to me at this place (other than Felicity and a few other things but I’ll get into that stuff later).

“While we understood that you had great strength, to see that level of power come out from just one punch was unexpected. So, we decided to enter you into the mentorship program”

“Mentorship program? Like Felicity?”

“Exactly as Miss Pittman does, yes. And well, the only candidate that has strength similar to your own would be our very own number one”

Absolute Victory. Was going to train me. Needless to say, I fanboyed the fuck out.

“I have to get ready! Gotta get my old weight set from home! Maybe even a newer one! OHMYGODIAMGETTINGTRAINEDBYABSOLUTEVICTORYAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!”

“Now wait just a minute there”

I stopped, hoping he wouldn’t tell me it would be boring or whatever or worse; with a separate instructor with him giving pointers on the side!

“Your strength is still untamed. You know how to use it, but you have no control over how it is used in tandem with your body. I’d rather have you rest and recover before you injure yourself again”. He wasn’t wrong either; Dom had managed to get me pretty good, let alone the Ticket to Hell. So I just simply nodded and assured him that I wouldn’t let him down.

“Oh I know you wont. I expect nothing less from a Barrick!”

I smiled. Couldn’t help feeling so fuckin’ amazing after he said that. Then he handed me the training schedule he had planned and my jaw dropped. He didn’t leave a single stone unturned. The man even had a diet plan laid out for me! Some of the crap he had me do was almost insane. And he said I had to use every ounce of adrenaline and strength I had, or else I wasn’t going to get anywhere. I was nervous, granted I had never used so much for so long. I got limits, not to mention the pretty big one thats called cardiac arrest. But no matter what, I was determined to live up to my mothers name. I was gonna show Absolute Victory the kinda strong I am and I was gonna surpass him! Granted, how I actually did that turned out a hell of a lot differently than how I expected it to go, but its done now. I can’t take it back and neither can he, though we both probably wish we did.

Anyway, as the months got colder and my recovery was all but over, I decided to go outside for a while during the early morning; get some air before my regime officially started. I decided to wear my comfy ass hoodie that I had brought with me (just in case) and have it under my jacket. I made sure to wear thermal socks and some sweat pants because I despise the cold. Don’t get me wrong, I love the festive months but the cold is unbearable. Anyway, I head out and who decides to follow me but Felicity. Turns out she had the same idea, although this wouldn’t be her first time training with the Blight Witch.

“Brandon is really nice! Ms. Glover says he’s as harmless as they come”

“Brandon? As in Brandon Carmine? Carnivore works here!?!?”

“Well….yeah. He works night shift. More importantly how did you know?”

“He’s so cool! How he can turn his arms into those huge claws and run super fast! Can I meet him?!”

“You’re more of a kid than a hero, Jacket”

We laughed and continued on our walk. Although the tension between was absolutely fucking there and dare I say we were both feeling very out of place, especially with what happened. Eventually the time came for us to meet our tutors at a….train yard? At first I was a little confused but then I remembered that its common knowledge among people that follow Absolute Victory. This train yard is his personal gym, since he’s so strong that a normal gym wouldn’t do. I had the honour of being able to train there and I fanboyed like crazy! That is, until I saw him. At least, what he looks like when he isn’t all muscled up. It was striking really. He looked kinda skinny and underweight even thought you could seriously tell it was really him. He was kinda built like me. Freaky right? He and Blight Witch (Or Harriet. Thought she prefers Ms. Glover) approached us and and greeted rather cheerfully. Harriet explained:

“Felicity, we’ll be continuing with your mastering of using two elements at once”

“You gotta be kiddin’….”

She and Fe entered what looked like one of those garages but for trains. They probably have a name but for the life of me, I don’t know it, nor remember it. Then, Absolute Victory just started to grow!. His muscles started growing until he was back to how you always see him.

“Are you ready for this, Barrick my lad?”

“You betcha ass I am sir!”

“That’s what I like to hear!”

The Association of Super Beings and Extraordinary Humans: Chapter 18

November 7, 2018 (updated December 11, 2018) Published by MorbidToast

So now Jackie was part of Team Spark. At the time we all figured it was temporary, since with us and the few other teams willing to take on Dom, we must have looked like we needed all the help we could get. Other than that, she had finally got her field license and her mentor, King Steel, felt she was ready for it. Although he wasn’t able to take her out on her first patrol; he had a lot of stuff to sort out, what with the media hounding us for answers and the countless other and arguably far more dangerous villains out there he had to deal with. So for the while, it seemed Jackie Flint was our newest member. Felicity was the first to greet her which didn’t surprise me; being surrounded by guys on the same team gets both boring and annoying and I’m one of em. Although ever since our first date, I kept catching her giving me weird looks. I don’t pretend to understand women. Frankly, half the time I don’t understand her at all since she has a habit of a) cracking under pressure and will say and do anything when she panics and b) talking a bit faster than I can comprehend, especially when she gets excited and lightning accidentally starts flying. She’s gotten better at controlling her powers now though, and even Blight Witch is apparently very pleased with her progress. Anyway, Jackie was more excited than I’d seen her before and she was more ready to get going than we were. While we were getting ready to head out, Tyler pulled her aside and explained the situation. She seemed to understand the things he was trying to say and I’m pretty sure he must have asked to try and be serious, because on the way to Sun Woo, she was quiet, which believe me, is very out of character for her. Everyone was tense; none of knew what we would find, though what scared me was if we found anything at all. But I was going to catch Dom and I was gonna smack him so hard he’d hit the moon and he’d die on impact. We got there after half an hour and the building was eerily quiet. I say that, but I honestly didn’t expect it to be busy. Still, it was very unsettling. Tyler started giving out the battle plan

“Okay, so we want to catch him off guard, and to do that we-“

I wasn’t really listening and the waiting was killing me, not to mention the last time I waited like this the love of my life died, so I kicked the fuckin’ door in and asked

“Dom, you better get your ass out here now! The more you make me wait, the harder I’ll hit!”

“Or you know…we could do that. There goes the surprise.”

We entered what looked like to be an apartment building lobby. Though it looked like it hadn’t been used in years which I guess made it the perfect place to hide. No one would really want to look into a condemned building, lest they find something they don’t want to. We all split up, Tyler took Jackie and Johnny which left me with Felicity. We took to searching the upper floors, while Tyler would check the ground floor and then follow us up, going through anything we didn’t and making sure to catch what we missed. It didn’t take Fe long to start a conversation; she likes to talk when she’s scared. Keeps her in the now you know?

“So ummm….our date was…”

“Pretty okay. Why’d you ask?”

“No reason. I loved it, but…I could tell something was bothering you.”

“It wasn’t you. Believe me, it wasn’t.”

“Its this Apex guy. You said you knew him? What did he do to you?”

I just went quiet after that. She was prying into something I didn’t want to expose her too. I knew he’d have a way of listening, and I didn’t want him taking her too. But I had to say something. She needed someone else to be there so she didn’t crack.

“He umm…..he killed someone I knew…”

“Oh god….I’m so sorry, I didn’t…”

“No, its my fault. I should’ve told you sooner”

She was quiet for a moment. I figured she’d be taking to heart what I said. And funnily enough, she asked me the very question I was already asking myself.

“D-do you want to kill him?…..”

“I’d be a liar if I said no”

“Oh…”

“But I won’t kill him. That would make me exactly what he wants me to be. That would mean he wins. So don’t you worry. I’m fuckin’ ready for him”

“Can I ask? Who did he kill?….”

“He….
He killed my girlfriend….”

Before she could respond, a loud rattling noise startled us both as we entered the 5th floor corridor. I worked through every possibility like lightning, going through everything that sicko would try. Felicity pulled me by the arm to a room and put her finger to my lips

“I…I think that’s Kyle…”

I looked at the door and back to her, nodding and grabbing the doorknob. I turned it as quietly as I could and slowly pushed it open just enough so I could get a good look without letting on that I had opened it. There was a shadow of someone strapped to a mattress frame and the light behind them. That had to be him! I burst through and got fully into the room and sure enough there was Kyle, naked and covered in cuts and bruises. Me and Fe untied him and I caught him, trying desperately to get him to wake up, to which he did, much to our relief. But whatever Dom did to him screwed with him. Still has if I’m honest

“N-no! No more! Please!”

“Kyle its us! Its Fe and Jack we’re here for you!

“Wha…”

“See? You’re safe, he’s not going to hurt you anymore”

He looked at us both, confused for a few seconds but he soon hugged us both, obviously thankful we got him away from that freak. But me knocking through that door must have been the perfect cover. I took my eyes off Felicity for one second, and I turn to see Dom with a knife to her throat.

“You like this one don’t you? Does she remind you of the other one? Alice, was it?”

“Don’t you dare….”

“Ah, ah, ah! Threats get you no where Barrick!”

The longer I looked at him, the more I could feel the adrenaline kicking my arms and legs to just run at him; put him through the fucking wall and leave. And that’s exactly what I tried to do. I threw the lamp first, which gave Fe time to get away. After she did I ran at that bastard and we both fell through the wall into the next room. I heard his knife hit the floor, so I swung and this time, my gloves were on. I hit metal, but didn’t feel a thing, and I started trying to get another good shot in.

“Fe! Get Kyle back downstairs!”

“But!-“

“I MEANT NOW FE! DON’T ARGUE JUST GO!”

She grabbed Kyle and helped the poor kid get out of the other room and down the corridor. Dom however managed to kick me off him and into the room above, to which I picked up the bed and slammed it into the top of his head as he climbed up. Unfortunately, it didn’t really do much

“Wood ain’t shit to steel, Barrick!”

He grabbed my foot and pulled me back down, slamming me through the other floors til I hit the ground floor, right in front of Tyler and the others. Whiles the others tried to register what they were seeing, I got a good punch in right into his cheek, which pushed him off me. After I got to my feet I grabbed his collar and belt and hurled that sick fuck into the street. It didn’t take Tyler long to have us all assembled outside, ready to take him on from any angle. We had him! Or so we thought. Turns out he’d been doing a bit of super power shopping or some shit, cuz the minute we had him surrounded, he bolted it faster than anyone I’d ever seen. Except Starlight! We had to worry about that later, but I wasn’t gonna give up that easily. One) I’ve been a Starlight fanboy for years (Don’t ask) so I know exactly how her superspeed works (again, don’t ask) and Two) if I know Dom, and I KNOW Dom he won’t be running away. He’ll be making it LOOK like he’s running away, and then he’ll ambush us when we aren’t looking.

“Jack”

Tyler put his hand on my shoulder. He knew exactly what I was thinking, and he wasn’t even looking at my face. He’s good at that. Always has been.

“He’s gone. We can catch him again and you know it. Let’s just get Kyle home and keep him safe”

No matter what I could’ve said back, I knew he was right. Jackie was disappointed at the fact she didn’t get to test her armour, but she seemed to enjoy the experience. We wrapped Kyle up in my jacket since it really was the only thing we had and got him back to our bunkhouse. Though of all the places we expected him to be, right here wasn’t one of them.

“Bout time you showed up. Now, where were we?”

Dom was here. And he has a knife planted into Axel’s shoulder. Before I could think, Jackie already cranked up the volume (both figuratively and literally).

“Axel, cover your ears!”

He did so without a seconds hesitation, albeit with some pain, and she let it rip. An ear piercing screech of sound blasted Dom and he pulled away from Axel, desperately trying to cover his ears. Whatever my plan was, I couldn’t tell you, but what I can tell you was that I grabbed his face and flung him out of the window before jumping out myself and almost landing on him. Our fight was gonna keep going wether he liked it or not and I was gonna make sure he didn’t get away. Although I didn’t really see what he had planned til he actually did it

“Heheh…”

“Somethin’ funny!?”

“Hey, Barrick”

“Keep talking and see what-“

“Boom”

And with that, he struck one palm against the other and I ended up getting damn near flung down by the entrance to the bunkhouse area. I definitely remember something being broken because I tried to stand up and I heard a big cracking sound that I probably shouldn’t be able to have heard, not to mention my shirt was burnt a little. It was one of my favourites too!. Regardless, I had to think fast, through the ringing in my ears and the blurriness of my vision. I saw coming towards me and as I tried toto move, my legs gave out and I fell. He got to me, putting his foot on my chest and twisting the flesh with his boot, making sure I felt more burning

“I’ve waited a long time for this. When you get to hell….”

He opened his hand and a large, spiked bone slithered out, aiming right at my head

“Tell that slut I killed I said hi”

The Association of Super Beings and Extraordinary Humans: Chapter 17

October 31, 2018 (updated December 11, 2018) Published by MorbidToast

That fucking tape man. No matter what we tell ourselves, we’ll never forget what was on that god forsaken tape. It’ll haunt us all for the rest of our lives. We were up well into the early hours of the morning and we had all fallen asleep in the common area of our bunkhouse. We were woken by Johnny, who came crashing into the room clutching the tape I had told Kyle to keep a hold of

“Hey, asshats! Look what just showed up!”

Once we all adjusted and realized what he was holding, we searched up, down and all around until we found a working tape player (that whole ordeal was easier said than done honestly) and set the tape going. Already we knew that this….whatever it was, it was going to be horrid. Vile. Something only Dom would conjure up. And I regret to tell you that we weren’t wrong. There, tied to a broken mattress frame and….oh god its really, really hard to write this down because it hit Kyle like a freight train. He refuses to talk about it; even now he won’t mention Dom at all and the sight of him makes him shiver like he’s stood in the snow. But whatever Dom did to him, it looks like Dom decided he didn’t need clothes. Kyle looks up at what I assume must be the camera and the look in his eyes was haunting. Panic. Just pure panic; it was almost like he was looking directly at us. Begging us to come and save him and hope we weren’t too late. I don’t need to tell you what it reminded me of. All I thought about was getting that kid as far away from Dom as possible, then splitting Dom’s head open like a damn watermelon. I wanted to kill him, and I’ll admit that. I’ve killed before and I know what that does to someone. But for Dom? I can’t think of a single person that would miss that freak. Anyway, Kyle looked to be in pretty bad shape. Dom was making sure he broke this kid just for this little tape. And the he appeared, giggling to himself like a child.

“Oh he certainly was fresh! It didn’t take much. Just a few pokes and slaps here and there. A cut or too. Just one problem”

He wheeled back and punched Kyle right across his jawline. We all saw the tears roll down his purple cheeks. And I could see that Axel was gettin’ mad. Can’t blame him; I would’ve been willing to hold that sonofa bitch down while Axel blew his goddamn head off. He continued…

“He won’t stop crying. But I learned a whole lot! Much more than he’d tell anyone! Isn’t that right, queer boy?” He punched him again. Every second of watching that thing was so tense. And he didn’t care about the others. They weren’t a part of his sick game. He wanted to get to me and Tyler. Mostly me, but I know he wanted Ty in on it too. Then he did what was arguably his worst mistake. He issued a challenge

“I’ll give you heroes two days. If you can’t find me and this cocksucker by then, well”
He brandished his knife again, quickly slashing it across Kyle’s cheek.

“I’ll make sure he’ll never want another man for the rest his life”

Dom picked up the camera, smiled and crushed it. And that was that. But before we knew it, Axel was already out the window, rocketing his way to god knows where.

“C’mon, we’re following him!” I said, grabbing my jacket and heading towards the door

“But we don’t even know where he’s going! How are we supposed to follow him?”. Fe made a good point. But my instinct was pushing me.

“He knows exactly where he’s going. So we follow him” and before we knew it, the four of us were all in Tyler’s car racing after Axel. While I’ll admit, I wanted to murder Dom just as much as he did, I knew I had to stop him. I had made too many mistakes; mistakes I regret to this day. Mistakes that make me wake up in the middle of the night because no matter what I will never, ever forget the things I’ve done. And I wasn’t about to let him end up like me. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Even Dom. But right now, I had to talk sense into that kid. Even if it meant I had to knock it into his brain. Eventually he landed somewhere outside the city, by what looked like a run down storage place. We got out of the car and watched him climb over the gate.

“Axel! Axel, dammit wait!”

“No! I ain’t waiting! The more I wait that psycho gets closer to killin’ my brother!”

“Axel!”

I ended up tearing the gate off of its hinges. Something was telling me that he knew where he was. And like it or not I wasn’t letting him go alone. It owed it to Alice to not let anyone else I knew die. Not again. I eventually caught up with him and grabbed him

“Axel, you take another step and I’m gonna smack you so hard you’ll see Venus!”

“Why are you even stopping me!?! If it were Tyler or Felicity you’d wanna kill this fucker too!”

“Yeah I know that but-“

“THEN LET GO OF ME!!!”

“Axel you know I won’t”

“WHY!?! HE’S GONNA KILL KYLE!!!”

“He won’t”

“HOW DO YOU KNOW EINSTEIN!?!”

“Because he’s scared of me. That’s why he’s taking others”

“Wh….wha-“

“Its complicated but I promise you. I will not let him kill Kyle. But I know you know where he’s gotta be. Or you at least have an idea right?”

He nodded. See? Told you; my guts never wrong. Almost.

“Then you have me with you. And the others won’t say no to going with you. But you’ll leave him to me”

“But!-“

“Listen to me kid. Whatever you wanted to do to him, forget it. I know you’ll kill him because you have the power to do it, but that’ll make you more like him than you’ll want. And you won’t ever forget that feeling and it’ll haunt you like a phantom for the rest of your life. A phantom you can’t get rid of. So you leave him to us, understood?”

He nodded again, looking rather defeated. I lead him back to the car and we squeezed in, having him give us directions. He lead us to a small wooded, area which housed a small warehouse. He told us it belonged to his uncle who owned a shipping business, but this particular one got shut down. So he, Kyle and a few friends used it as a sort of weekend retreat for a while until they just up and abandoned it.

“If Kyle really told him stuff, then he’d have told him about this place. He’s hiding somewhere we know. I’m sure of it”

A quick search of the place proved both Kyle and Dom’s absence. But that didn’t stop us from trying a few other places but, no luck. The whole situation was stressing us all out, let alone Axel. I couldn’t imagine the shit that was going through his head. The closest person I’ve ever had to a brother is Tyler, and even now I still consider him family, just like I do with the others. But this? This is different. Tyler dying would send me to a dark place, but Axel? He’s never felt that urge before. The absolute urge to strangle the life out of another human being. And like it or not, I refuse to let someone like him; someone who has his whole career ahead of him to fall into that pit. We searched all day and no luck. We ended up back at our bunkhouse, frantically going through maps and sightings and any single piece of evidence we had. Johnny went though that tape over and over again because he swore he’d seem that room before, but he couldn’t figure it out.

Again, we spent the night searching, panic washing over all of us. Axel hadn’t come out of his room. It was evident he was alive, since he was pushing the plates of food we gave him out the door when he was done. I felt so sorry for him. Genuinely I did. I wanted to talk to him, you know, since I was the one training him up and all but my mum always taught me; when someone doesn’t want to talk to anyone, they need to talk to themselves first. Self honesty and self confidence walk hand in hand she used to say. Axel needed time to believe what I said. To believe that he really could save Kyle. So I decided to let him figure that out on his own. So I left him to see it through. He’s a tough kid; maybe even tougher than me, and I believe that one hundred percent.

I joined the others in the common area, all of us still desperately going through clues and such. I watched them all work, and for a while it almost seemed like they were machines. Total robots going through as much as they could in what little time we had. Then, Johnny piped up and to our semi relief, he had an answer

“I got it! Its the Sun Woo place in Chinatown!”

“You’re absolutely sure!?” Tyler inquired, looking absolutely desperate for anything

“I’ve been through that place more times than you can count. I’m positive”

“Team! We’re heading out!”

Tyler nodded at me to get Axel, but I gave him a pretty plain look that told him everything he needed to know. So we were a man down but that wasn’t going to stop us. But luckily for us, a certain engineer had finally gotten her field license, and King Steel and Jackie, or should I say, SoundStorm, met us in our way out. And damn was she kitted out. Her armour was pretty high tech and was covered what looked like speakers.

I’ll say this

She’s a part of the team now and we love her to bits. And she helped us get Kyle back and put the hurt on Dom. I promise you guys will love it. Although I still have a long way to go with this. I just hope you’ll enjoy it til I finish. I gotta go now. Hero stuff. Stay safe ya hear?

The Association of Super Beings and Extraordinary Humans: Chapter 16

October 23, 2018 (updated July 16, 2020) Published by MorbidToast

So, are you guys ready for Full Charge? I hope so because Full Charge Tyler is crazy! I’ll explain it. So, some powers have a ultra mega awesome special little skill. And its basically, it pushes us and itself to a place that most people I’ve met say it makes us gods. While I’ll say I’m not a god; not in the slightest, some people (one named Axel for the record) love that. I also happen to have that skill, but that’s for the end of this story. Trust me, you’ll love it! Maybe. For now, lets let Tyler have his fame. And don’t you dare touch my laptop I swear to god I will actually put you through the floor and YOU know I will. Smurf.

Anyway, holding that door was easier said than done. Whatever it was doing on the other side, it really, REALLY wanted in. The others even came to help me, pushing back against it. I turned to look at Tyler, silently asking him to, you know, hurry the fuck up. And I got a look at probably the coolest looking superpower ever! He was stood in between two huge generator, all hooked up to the rest of our city and few placed outside it. He was quite literally, draining the power grid and feeding it back. Taking more and more with each cycle. Eventually, when he reached Full Charge, he stepped down and oh my god, I could feel it. You know that static electricity in the air, the kind that makes you’re hair stand on end? It was that. He looked like he’d literally just descended from the heavens or some shit. His eyes were sparking with electricity, you could see the veins in his neck glowing with charge. His skin had a blue hue to it, but I could see burn marks appearing. Whatever this was, he couldn’t hold it for long.

“When I say so, get out of the way as fast as you can. If you’re lucky, he’ll cone straight for me”

“Why ‘ugh’ whys that?”

“He eats electricity. More specifically, the electricity our brains produce. And I’m a fucking buffet at this point”

He nodded and on three, the rest of us got the hell outta there and he came crashing through, screaming a scream I’d only hear the day I walk through satans gates. It swung its arms all over the place, wreaking everything they hit.

“You wanna eat?! Then come get dinner!”

Tyler ran at that thing and did an awesome spin kick thing right to whatever its jaw might’ve been. I’m still not too sure about its actual, like, physique. Its really confusing. Since electricity technically doesn’t actually have a form right? Like a physical form? Ah well, I’ll figure it out someday. Anyway, the whole room burst with sparks and light, as they continued to fight. Tyler reached to his belt, and pulled out this like retractable staff thing. Awesome right!? He started whacking this thing with it, and even shot electricity out of it, and boy it really didn’t like that. They smacked and clawed at each other for what seemed like hours until, he grabbed it, dragged it to the floor and just….vanished

Just like that. We all got up and looked around, having absolutely no fucking clue what just happened.

“So uhh. What”

Did…did the captain just die?…”

“I am….surprised. To say the least”

“Huh”

“C’mon Ty…Whatever it is you gotta do just do it…”

(Game: try to guess who said what. Lets get some of that interactivity most people like nowadays). We all stood in a tight circle, ready and waiting for whenever that thing came barreling out. But something told me this is what he wanted to happen. While I was piecing this together in my head, Kyle found something. Something we’d been looking for.

“Uhh, team? There’s a video tape here”

“Video tape? What is this, 1985?”

“It’s got a note….for Barrick’s eyes only”

The mention of my name snapped me out of my trance, fully aware that my teammates were waiting for some sign of direction. So, I took the most reasonable course of action.

“Keep it on you. Do not let that thing damage it. We’ll see what’s on it later”

Kyle nodded, stuffing the tape into one of his trenchcoat pockets. I’m telling you, those pockets are either black holes or actual pocket dimensions. Its frightening the amount of stuff he can fit in em both. Anyway, we stood looking around wondering what happened, when all of a sudden, Tyler came flying out of nowhere and right through the door Killer Watt had come through. We rushed outside and helped him to his feet. He was still fully charged though some of it must have been discharged somehow. His costume was ripped in some parts and it looked like his nose was broken (thankfully it wasn’t).

“Captain, are you okay!? We have to get you out of here!”

“I’ve already called an evac out of here. We have to let the prof-“

“I am a professional! I’m fine, we can do this!”

Killer Watt broke his way out of the station, screaming and slamming his fists down to the group, obviously angry his meal had gotten away yet again. And couldn’t help but piss me off. Yeah in case you haven’t guessed yet, I got anger issues. Perks of being super strong I guess; you’ll always be mad at somethin’. And I already know it; I’m really protective. I shouldn’t be honestly, since I know my friends and family can handle themselves, but Alice’s death taught me something. Everyone and everything you love and care about can be taken away in an instant. You may not think it’ll happen to you, but it always catches up with everyone. Especially in this day and age, where superpowers and stuff run around. And uhh, I might have uhh…. lost some control there at the end. Trust me, you gotta get me absolutely furious for me to lose it. But…something just snapped. The more I looked at this huge thing screaming and smashing shit, I saw Thrash. I saw Alice getting smacked around, absolutely defenceless. I heard her beg for me to get there….beg for me to hurry….

Needless to say, I think I scared the shit out of everyone. I stood in front of them all, digging my nails into my palms to the point they bled. I roared as loud as I could and ran at it, pouncing on it like a rabid wolf. It didn’t really work, and I ended up getting tossed away like a broken doll. But that didn’t stop me, and I ran and jumped on its back, and I even bit its ear (again, I think it was its ear. Its body is weird) I started smacking it’s head against the ground at some point, since most of this is a blurred recollection. Though Tyler remembers what is said, so apparently I said;

“Pick on me!! I dare you! Try and touch her again you FUCKING MESS!!! I’M GOING TO KICK YOUR TEETH IN!!”

Yeah, even though that thing is a dangerous monster, I felt bad afterwards. Needless to say, Tyler managed to drag me off of it and managed to scare it away doing this thing called “Shock and Awe” or whatever the pun was. I sat there on the ground afterwards, just staring into nothing, feeling real woozy and tired after that sudden adrenaline rush wore off. Then again, I’m used to that feeling. Axel was the first to voice his concern

“Okay, that was fucking scary. What are you? You some kinda monster yerself?”

I didn’t answer. Didn’t feel like talking to anyone until of course, he showed up

“Ooooooo Bad-Man Barrick almost lost his marbles there didn’t he?”

He laughed afterwards. Everyone, turned and prepared for anything, all ready to fight at any possible second. Except me. All I did was look at the sick son of a bitch. I knew what he wanted. I knew what hand he was playing. And I walked right into his trap….

“So did he scare you?”

“It ran Apex. You’re little shock dog wasn’t much in the end”

“Ohh my sweet dear woman. I was talking about your boyfriend here”

I felt it again. That rush of adrenaline and emotion when he said that. You know, looking back I have no idea why I began to hate her after that. She meant me no harm, and I was the one who made the first move anyway. She just wanted someone to help make things seem a little less shitty, just like me. And he made it worse. He used one of D-Rips void bubbles to trap Kyle and practically screamed with laughter!

“Oh yeah, by the way. I’m gonna be taking this one he looks….fresh” he brandished that same bowie knife he used to threaten me and faster than Starlight, he ran towards the city. There was no way we’d be able to catch him in time.

We spent weeks tracking down Kyle. His tacking beacon had gone offline. But we didn’t give up. He wasn’t dead and we knew it. But honestly, I’m glad he got through it all. Because when that video tape got sent a few weeks later, nothing could’ve prepared us for what was on it….

Scarlet Lake (part two)

October 19, 2018 Published by DragonOtaku

I was ignorant. That “world” waiting for me wasn’t beautiful. It was unforgiving, and it took everything from me. But it also gave me more than I could know. No, that world wasn’t “waiting” for me. It was rushing me to my end. And I had no idea.

That day, I had discovered a hideaway of sorts. Just a little clearing in the foliage, with the occasional dragonfly fluttering by. I stumbled across it while running through the trees. I had ran from the house during an argument between my mother and stepfather. They were yelling at each other, yet again, nonstop. And I couldn’t take it anymore. It had been going on forever. And only that one day did I discover and enjoy the only solace left to me: the clearing. The same clearing where, on that day, I had shed my last living tears. While I was running, tears leaked from my eyes constantly. My face was drenched with them. Why did they ever marry? Was it just to prove people wrong? Just so they could say how they had been right? My brother. Why had I left him behind? He would have to live with that his entire life. And no one would be there to help him. He’s just a helpless infant, and he can’t defy his wretched parents. He can’t do anything about them, and even when he was older, we were too far away from any help to run to. That’s why I was running to one of the only places I knew. I knew that when my brother got older, the mental abuse would start. And from there, it would only get worse. I felt horrible and weak, knowing that I wasn’t strong enough to stay and help him. My mix of emotions was only making me collapse to my knees more often. I was a combination of depressed, stressed, confused, and angry. But mostly, the anger was toward myself.

It was dark and cold, as it should be at night. The moonlight shined down, reflecting off the lake, surrounded by stars. The never ending darkness continued to engulf the land as I ran. I hoped, at least, they would never go as far with my brother as they had with me. Please, I thought, as I rubbed my sore and bruised arm, don’t hurt him like you hurt me.

This one absolutely demolished me...I actually laughed instead of breathing out through my nose loudly.
