Born Evil: Chapter 3

August 8, 2018 (updated August 15, 2018) Published by ERook

Whitney didn’t sleep much that night. As if her insomnia wasn’t bad enough, she couldn’t get the thought of blood out of her head. It reminded her of her parents.

After a sleepless night that felt like forever, Whitney decided it was time to get out of bed. She got up, opened the bedroom door and had a mini heart attack when she saw her little raincoat cousin standing in her path. She jumped back a little bit grabbing her chest and catching her breath. “Good morning” said Whitney. Her cousin said nothing, she just stuck her hand out slowly as if to apologize. Whitney reached out to accept. Before she could, the little girl quickly pulled her hand back and ran down the hall. Even though she only saw a glimpse of her little hands, Whitney could not see any cuts or scratches, at least nothing that would justify how much blood was on her hands the day before. Whitney took a moment to think it through before she went downstairs. Whitney had been through a lot, but after almost no sleep, she wanted to be sure she wasn’t seeing things.

Whitney slowly made her way down the staircase to see her Aunt in the kitchen making breakfast. As grateful as she was for food and shelter, Whitney was not in the mood to sit down with her aunt at the moment to eat. She just grabbed some toast and made her way outside. Whitney grabbed a seat on the back patio and took in the view of the water. As stressful as the past few weeks had been for her, the water always relaxed her. Getting lost in the moment, enjoying the quiet breeze and the warm air, Whitney fell asleep.

Hours later, Whitney awoke to the sight of her cousin strolling along the beach, chin down, dragging what looked like a small animal. Whitney shouted for her attention, but got no response. The little hooded girl just kept meandering the beach dragging the small carcass through the sand. Barefoot, Whitney leaped to her feet and rand down the hillside to her. The trail between the backyard and the beach was covered with bushes and the ground with shards of broken glass from old beer bottles. This didn’t stop her. After a minute of painfully running the trail she reached the beach. She ran toward her cousin, twisted her around by the shoulders and looked into her eyes through her mask. “What are you doing with that!” shouted Whitney. The little girl dropped a dead cat at Whitney’s feet and turned around. She quickly ran in the opposite direction.

Whitney was shocked. She knew her cousin was shy and not too open to people being around, but she thought she was on a lot better terms than that. Whitney was at a loss for words and just accepted her cousin running away from her. At that point Whitney was just hoping her cousin had nothing to do with the poor cat’s death, but had no idea why she would be interested in dragging it around. The lack of connection between herself and her cousin brought a tear to Whitney’s eye; as always, she falsely blamed herself.

Whitney picked up the cat by the tail and carried it back up to her aunt’s beach house. Her feet were still dripping blood from all the glass shards she had to hike through. Upon reaching the top Whitney went to her aunt for first aid. Lily carefully removed the shards from her feet with a pair of small tweezers and helped her to her feet. She did’t say anything to Lily about the cat. After she was comfortable on her feet again, she disposed of the kitten properly.

Born Evil: Chapter 2

July 25, 2018 (updated August 17, 2018) Published by ERook

The first few weeks with her aunt went by quickly. Whitney spent most of her time on the back porch reading and keeping to herself, mostly only talking with her aunt at meals and when she needed help around the house. Whitney hardly ever saw her cousin, as she spent a majority of her time behind her locked bedroom door. Whitney had nothing against it, they both understood why people keep to themselves sometimes.

As the sun was setting, Whitney closed her book and headed inside to help Lily prepare dinner. Lily’s slightly plump figure was justified by her cooking skills. Whitney was yet to be served a meal at her aunt’s house that she didn’t thoroughly enjoy. Tonight, it was pasta. While Lily boiled some water, Whitney set the table for three. She always had strong attention to detail, and even though she was never worried about disappointing her aunt, she was unsure of exactly how long they would be living together and wanted to be as precise as possible. After scanning the table for about ten minutes to make sure every dish was in its proper place, Whitney felt comfortable enough to move on to the next task. She dished up Alfredo for her aunt, then her cousin, and then herself and carefully placed the plates on the table.

Lily and Whitney sat down together and placed their napkins on their laps. “Dinner!” shouted Lily, tilting her head toward the stairs so her daughter could better hear. In the middle of their bites, a door could be heard creaking open in the hallway upstairs. They could hear light footsteps on the stairs heading toward the kitchen. Whitney threw a smile at Lily to show her gratitude for another delicious meal. They both broke eye contact simultaneously when Lily’s daughter walked in.

Still wearing her trademark raincoat, boots, and mask, Lily’s daughter walked up to her and pulled her hands out of her jacket pockets. They were covered in blood. Whitney jumped out of her seat and ran toward her to inspect her cousin’s hands. Lily, less provoked, slowly grabbed them and said to her “What happened this time?” Lily stood up and walked her toward the kitchen sink. Having to stand up on her toes to reach, Lily turned the sink on for her daughter and help her scrub them. “Is she okay?” asked Whitney calmly. “She’s okay.” said Lily, “She’s just a little fragile. Probably a cut from playing outside.” Whitney wondered what she could have done to cut her hands that badly. After she washed up, Lily handed her a large cotton pad and immediately put her hands back in her raincoat. Head down, the little girl non-verbally excused herself from dinner and walked back upstairs to her room. Lily and Whitney watched her pace up the stairs as they both sat back down at the table to finish their meals.

“Does that happen often?” asked Whitney. “Occasionally” replied Lily, trying not to make eye contact. “She may be quiet and keep to herself, but she’s actually pretty adventurous and loves trying things. She probably just slipped in the mud outside and cut her hand on a rock or branch.” Whitney nodded and finished her dinner, just hoping that her cousin’s hands would heal up okay.

Born Evil

May 16, 2018 (updated August 15, 2018) Published by ERook

*AN: This is a short story based off of a really interesting dream I had a few months ago. I thought it was pretty cool and wanted to write about. I’m not a very good artist but wish I could have some pictures to go with the story. If anybody wanted to do any pics of their interpretation I definitely wouldn’t mind! Hope you enjoy 🙂

It was a rainy fall evening when Whitney pulled up to her aunt’s house. The two had never met before, but each had heard only the best things. She stepped out of the cab with her suitcase, anxious, but eager to meet her aunt for the first time and explore the coast. She was only sixteen at the time and was looking forward to seeing everything Oregon had to offer.

A woman stepped out of the house and worked her way down the long, twisted staircase that lay in the hill in front of her home. “Whitney! Welcome!” she yelled as she paced slowly down the stairs. “It is so great to finally see you in person, I’m your aunt Lily. You looked so cute in all the pictures your mom showed me.” “Pleasure to meet you.” said Whitney with a nervous crack in her voice.

Lily picked up Whitney’s suitcase with one hand and wrapped her arm around her with other as the cab drove out. “You’re going to love it here.” Lily said “We got a wonderful view of the ocean from our back porch and the school is just a few miles away.” “We?” asked Whitney. “Who’s we?” “Oh dear I forgot to mention, you’ll be living with me and my daughter.” “I didn’t realize you had a daughter, my mother never mentioned her.” “Yes.” Replied Lily. “She’s been with me for about seven years now. She’s sitting in the house right now.”

Walking up to the house, Whitney noticed a hooded figure in a bright yellow rain coat sitting in the front window. The raincoat turned toward her in a quick jerking motion, almost as if surprised. The hooded figure was wearing a dark plastic mask, glaring down the front yard stairs as Lily and Whitney were walking up. “That’s her.” Said Lily with a smile on her face. “I’m sure you two will get along great.”

Whitney assisted her aunt to the top step as she opened the door. Lily’s daughter came running to the door, wearing a raincoat, boots, mask, and gloves. “Hey there, I guess I’m your cousin Whitney.” The little girl, mask on, quickly glanced up at her and then ran up the stairs. “She’s a little shy and not very talkative” said Lily. “That’s okay. I’m not too outgoing myself” replied Whitney.
